Understanding APS Scores: How Your Child’s Maths Mark Impacts University Admission

A learner may have a good overall matric result and still discover that they do not qualify for their preferred university programme. In many cases, the missing requirement is not the total Admission Point Score (APS), but the learner’s Mathematics mark.

Understanding APS early gives parents and learners time to set realistic targets, choose suitable programmes and improve the subjects that matter most. This guide explains the common South African APS calculation and shows why Mathematics can influence university admission in more than one way.

What is an APS score?

APS stands for Admission Point Score. Universities use it as one of the tools for assessing whether an applicant meets the academic entry requirements for a qualification.

Under the commonly used National Senior Certificate scale, a learner receives between one and seven points for each subject according to the percentage achieved:

For example, Unisa calculates APS using six recognised 20-credit subjects, excludes Life Orientation and sets the maximum at 42 points. This is a useful starting point for families learning how APS works. However, it is not a formula that can be applied blindly to every institution. See Unisa’s official APS explanation.

Important: universities do not all calculate APS in the same way

The name “APS” can create the impression that every university uses the same calculation. They do not.

  • Unisa uses six recognised 20-credit subjects, excludes Life Orientation and uses the familiar 1–7 scale.
  • Wits uses its own points table, calculates the score from the best seven subjects including Life Orientation, and awards additional points for strong English and Mathematics results. Faculty-specific subjects must still be included. View the Wits APS rules.
  • UCT generally allocates admission points equal to the learner’s actual NSC percentages and adds six subjects, excluding Life Orientation but including English and any subjects required by the chosen programme. Marks below 40% do not attract points. View UCT’s official calculation.

This means that an online APS calculator may give a useful estimate but not necessarily the score a particular faculty will use. Always calculate the score according to the university and programme being considered.

How does your child’s Mathematics mark affect APS?

At an institution using the common 1–7 NSC scale, Mathematics contributes points in the same way as another recognised subject:

  • 55% in Mathematics contributes 4 points.
  • 65% contributes 5 points.
  • 75% contributes 6 points.
  • 85% contributes 7 points.

This makes certain boundaries especially important. Improving from 59% to 60%, from 69% to 70%, or from 79% to 80% may add another point to the learner’s APS at institutions that use this scale.

A worked APS example

If the Mathematics mark improves from 68% to 70%, it moves from Level 5 to Level 6 and the estimated total rises from 31 to 32. That one-point improvement can place the learner closer to a programme’s minimum APS—but the subject requirement still matters.

A good total APS does not cancel a low Mathematics mark

This is the part families sometimes miss. Many qualifications have two separate academic requirements:

  1. A minimum total APS or faculty score; and
  2. A minimum percentage or achievement level in Mathematics and other required subjects.

A learner may therefore reach the required total APS but still be ineligible because their Mathematics result is below the programme minimum.

For example, Wits currently lists an APS of 44 or higher and Mathematics at Level 6 for its BSc Computer Science programme. Meeting the APS without achieving at least Level 6 Mathematics would not satisfy the listed requirements. Check the official Wits Computer Science requirements.

UCT Commerce provides another clear example: its published minimum is 60% for Mathematics, while Computer Science and Analytics require 70%, and Actuarial Science requires 80%. Requirements can be even higher in specialised programmes; UCT Chemical Engineering, for example, publishes minimums of 80% for Mathematics and 70% for Physical Sciences. Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy are not interchangeable

Mathematical Literacy is valuable and accepted for many qualifications, but it does not provide access to every programme that accepts Mathematics.

Numerate fields such as engineering, actuarial science, computer science and many programmes in science, commerce and health sciences generally require Mathematics. Wits, for example, states that Mathematics is compulsory for its numerate programmes, while Mathematical Literacy is considered for selected areas such as LLB, Education and Humanities, with stated exceptions.

Before a learner changes from Mathematics to Mathematical Literacy, the family should check the subject requirements for several possible careers—not only the learner’s first choice. Changing subjects may improve a school average while also closing access to certain university pathways.

Why minimum requirements should be treated as the starting point

Meeting the published minimum does not guarantee admission. Universities receive more qualifying applications than they have available spaces, particularly for competitive programmes.

Both Wits and Unisa explicitly warn applicants that meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee an offer. Selection can also depend on space, academic competition, required subjects, National Benchmark Test results and other faculty criteria.

A learner who needs 70% Mathematics should therefore not aim for exactly 70%. A safer target creates room for difficult assessments, examination pressure and stronger competition from other applicants.

What parents and learners should do now

  1. Choose several possible programmes. Include a first choice, realistic alternatives and at least one backup pathway.
  2. Check the official prospectus. Use the correct university, faculty, programme and admission year.
  3. Write down both requirements. Record the minimum APS and the minimum Mathematics, English and Physical Sciences marks separately.
  4. Calculate APS more than once. Use each university’s own method rather than relying on one general calculator.
  5. Set a Mathematics target above the minimum. Divide the improvement into topic-level goals and monitor progress every term.
  6. Address gaps early. Algebra, functions, trigonometry and problem-solving build across grades. Waiting until the final matric examination makes recovery much harder.

The Mathematics mark is more than one number

Your child’s Mathematics result can increase the APS total, satisfy a compulsory subject requirement and keep demanding career pathways open. It can also become the reason an otherwise strong application does not qualify.

The best approach is to work backwards from the learner’s possible university programmes, identify the required Mathematics mark and begin improving well before applications close.
