Grade 9 Mathematics – Term 3 – The School of Mathematics

About Course

This Grade 9 Mathematics Term 3 course covers two-dimensional geometry, measurement, data handling and probability as prescribed by the 2026 DBE Annual Teaching Plan.

Learners investigate properties of triangles and quadrilaterals, solve geometric problems, calculate area and perimeter, conduct data investigations and determine probabilities using tables and tree diagrams.

Course Content

Geometry of 2D Shapes
Classify triangles and quadrilaterals; investigate angles, sides and diagonals; explore interior and exterior angles; establish minimum conditions for congruent and similar triangles; solve problems involving unknown sides and angles.

Area and Perimeter
Use appropriate formulae and SI-unit conversions to calculate the perimeter and area of polygons and circles; investigate how changing dimensions affects perimeter and area.

Collecting, Organising and Summarising Data
Pose investigation questions; select appropriate data sources, samples and collection methods; distinguish samples and populations; organise numerical data and calculate measures of central tendency and dispersion.

Representing, Interpreting and Reporting Data
Draw and interpret bar graphs, double bar graphs, histograms, pie charts, broken-line graphs and scatter plots; compare data sets; identify error, bias, extremes and outliers; draw conclusions and make predictions.

Probability
Determine probabilities for compound events using two-way tables and tree diagrams; predict relative frequency; compare experimental relative frequency with theoretical probability and explain differences.

Term 3 Project, Revision and Formal Test
An integrated project covering selected Term 1–3 topics, followed by Term 3 revision and preparation for the formal test.
