Grade 9 Mathematics – Term 2 – The School of Mathematics

About Course

This Grade 9 Mathematics Term 2 course develops algebraic manipulation, equation solving, graph interpretation and geometric reasoning in accordance with the 2026 DBE Annual Teaching Plan.

Learners expand, simplify and factorise expressions, solve equations, draw and interpret linear graphs, and solve problems involving angle relationships in straight-line geometry.

Course Content

Expanding and Simplifying Algebraic Expressions
Use commutative, associative and distributive laws and laws of exponents; add and subtract like terms; multiply and divide monomials, binomials, trinomials and polynomials; work with common and decimal fractions; determine squares, cubes and roots; substitute numerical values.

Factorising Algebraic Expressions
Factorise using common factors, difference of two squares and trinomials; simplify expressions and algebraic fractions using factorisation.

Algebraic Equations
Set up and interpret equations; solve by inspection, additive and multiplicative inverses, laws of exponents and factorisation; solve equations where a product of factors equals zero; use substitution to generate ordered pairs.

Graphs
Analyse global graphs; identify linear or non-linear, constant, increasing or decreasing, maximum or minimum, discrete or continuous features; determine intercepts and gradient; draw linear graphs from equations and determine equations from graphs.

Geometry of Straight Lines
Describe angle relationships formed by perpendicular and intersecting lines and by parallel lines cut by a transversal; solve geometric problems using these relationships.

Term 2 Investigation, Revision and Formal Test
An investigation based on a Term 2 topic, followed by integrated Term 1 and Term 2 revision and preparation for the formal midyear test.
