About Course

This Grade 8 Mathematics Term 3 course is aligned with the 2026 DBE Annual Teaching Plan. Learners collect, organise, summarise and interpret data; investigate probability; solve angle problems involving straight lines; and study the properties of triangles and quadrilaterals.

Emphasis is placed on mathematical investigation, accurate definitions, geometric reasoning and problem solving. Learners complete a project spanning content from Terms 1 to 3 as well as a formal Term 3 test.

Course Content

Data Handling
<p>Pose investigative questions; select data sources and samples; design questionnaires; organise data using tallies, tables and stem-and-leaf displays; group data; calculate and interpret mean, median, mode, range and extremes.</p>

Probability
<p>List outcomes for equally likely experiments; calculate theoretical probability; predict relative frequency; compare experimental relative frequency with probability and explain differences.</p>

Geometry of Straight Lines
<p>Recognise angle relationships formed by perpendicular lines, intersecting lines and parallel lines cut by a transversal; solve geometric problems using these relationships.</p>

Triangles
<p>Classify triangles by sides and angles; investigate the sum of interior angles, equilateral-triangle angles and isosceles base angles; solve unknown-angle and unknown-side problems.</p>

Quadrilaterals
<p>Define and classify parallelograms, rectangles, squares, rhombi, trapezia and kites; investigate side and angle properties and the interior-angle sum; solve geometric problems.</p>

Similar and Congruent 2D Shapes
<p>Identify and describe congruent and similar shapes by comparing shape and size, then apply the properties in geometric reasoning.</p>

Term 1-3 Mathematics Project
<p>A formal project combining selected content from Terms 1 to 3, completed before the end of Term 3 with clear milestones and assessment criteria.</p>

Term 3 Revision and Formal Test
<p>Revision and formal assessment of data handling, probability, straight-line geometry and the properties of two-dimensional shapes.</p>
