About Course

This Grade 8 Mathematics Term 2 course follows the 2026 DBE Annual Teaching Plan and builds the algebraic foundations needed for high-school mathematics. Learners work with exponents, algebraic language, expressions, equations, functions, relationships and graphs.

The course moves from recognising variables and algebraic conventions to simplifying expressions, solving equations, generating tables and interpreting relationships in different representations. It includes an investigation, guided practice, quizzes and a formal test assessing content from Terms 1 and 2.

Course Content

Term 2 Investigation
A formal investigation based on one Term 2 topic, designed to assess reasoning, conjecture, communication and mathematical justification.

Exponents
Represent whole numbers and integers in exponential form; scientific notation with positive exponents; establish and apply exponent laws; calculate squares, cubes, square roots and cube roots; solve contextual problems.

Algebraic Language and Expressions
Interpret symbolic rules; identify variables, constants, coefficients, exponents, like and unlike terms; use algebraic conventions; expand, simplify, multiply and divide algebraic expressions; substitute values.

Algebraic Equations
Set up equations from problem situations; interpret equations; solve by inspection and by using additive and multiplicative inverses and exponent laws; substitute to determine numerical values and generate ordered pairs.

Functions and Relationships
Determine input values, output values and rules using flow diagrams, tables, formulae and equations; interpret and justify equivalent representations of relationships.

Graphs
Analyse and interpret global graphs; distinguish linear and non-linear behaviour; identify constant, increasing, decreasing, maximum, minimum, discrete and continuous features; draw graphs from descriptions and ordered pairs.

Terms 1 and 2 Revision and Formal Test
Integrated revision followed by a formal assessment covering the Term 1 number topics and the Term 2 exponent, algebra, function and graph topics.
