About Course

This Grade 8 Mathematics Term 1 course develops strong number sense and calculation skills in line with the 2026 DBE Annual Teaching Plan. Learners revise and extend their understanding of whole numbers, integers, common fractions, decimal fractions, percentages and numeric and geometric patterns.

The course includes guided lessons, worked examples, practice activities, quizzes, an assignment and a formal term test. By the end of the course, learners should calculate confidently, solve contextual financial and ratio problems, move between equivalent number forms and describe pattern rules verbally and algebraically.

Course Content

Whole Numbers
<p>Properties of whole numbers; additive and multiplicative identities; division by zero; prime factors; LCM and HCF; ratio, rate and sharing; percentage and financial problems involving profit, loss, discount, VAT, budgets, accounts, loans, simple interest, hire purchase and exchange rates.</p>

Integers
<p>Counting, ordering and comparing integers; addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; calculations involving squares, cubes and roots; properties of integer operations; contextual problem solving.</p>

Common Fractions and Percentages
<p>Operations with common fractions and mixed numbers; fractions of whole numbers; division by fractions; squares, cubes and roots of fractions; simplification and equivalent fractions; percentage increase and decrease; contextual problem solving.</p>

Decimal Fractions
<p>Ordering, comparing and rounding decimals; multiplication and division of decimal fractions; squares, cubes and roots; estimation and checking; equivalent common-fraction, decimal and percentage forms; contextual problems.</p>

Numeric and Geometric Patterns
<p>Investigate and extend numeric and geometric patterns represented physically, diagrammatically, in sequences, tables and algebraic form; describe and justify general rules.</p>

Term 1 Assignment
<p>A formal assignment assessing whole numbers, integers and common fractions, supported by submission instructions and a marking rubric.</p>

Term 1 Revision and Formal Test
<p>Consolidated revision of all Term 1 topics followed by a formal assessment covering number operations, fractions, decimals, percentages and patterns.</p>
